The three main factors to consider
1. Life expectancy
Most units last only ten to fifteen years. After that point they become expensive to repair and tend to break down often. Parts are sometimes discontinued, which makes them more expensive or completely unavailable. A unit eight years old or older is nearing its life expectancy.
2. Efficiency
Older units don’t run as efficiently as they did out of the box; you can derate them about one SEER for every five years of age. Completely restoring an aging unit is expensive, and at best you only get back the efficiency it was rated for when it was made. Newer units are much more efficient thanks to constant improvements and rising energy standards, so replacing an old, inefficient unit can save you money.
3. Current condition
Consider the quality of the equipment (reputable brand vs. builder model) and the number of breakdowns. If your unit hasn’t been properly maintained or is lower quality, consider replacement as a serious option.
